Outer Banks is a line of islands along the coast of North Carolina beginning at the border between North Carolina and Virginia. This tremendously popular area features some of the best waterfront / beachfront activities along the eastern seaboard. The northern islands include the areas of Corolla (go up through Corolla and you can access a four-wheel drive only area that extends up into Virginia). South of Corolla, you have the areas of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head and Manteo. Continuing further south, you run into Rodanthe, Avon, Buxton and Hatteras. To continue south from Hatteras, you must ride a ferry to the island of Ocracoke. The Outer Banks is approximately 70 miles from Corolla to Hatteras.
